German companies to look for sustainable packaging alternatives to plastics
The demand for solutions that reduce plastics, increase recyclability of the packaging and the use of bio-based materials is growing rapidly amongst consumers and regulators in Germany. Despite some bans on plastic use – such as the banned plastic bags – too much plastic waste is still produced in Germany. Packaging makes a significant contribution to this. In Germany, for example, 27 percent of the plastic consumed is packaging, but at the same time plastic packaging accounts for almost 60 percent of plastic waste.
The German market for sustainable packaging makes about 35% of the total European market, with France, UK, and Italy following. The sustainable packaging market (green packaging) in Germany includes all materials that contribute less waste and have a smaller effect on resources and energy consumption compared to conventional packaging materials. The need for new packaging materials including compostable and biodegradable materials, recycled materials, and cellulose materials opens new opportunities for companies in sustainable packaging industry.
